The Importance of God's Name
Understanding God's nature through His name
The following commentary is derived from an email I wrote to a man who didn't understand scripture very well, explaining why we were embracing the true Biblical names of God:
A church should be accepting, if not embracing teaching about the real name of God. This is NOT merely a cultural issue. There have been too many distortions of names throughout history - even names of days and months have been paganized. Deception and pride are the devil's two best weapons, and if we refuse to acknowledge God's real name that He chose for Himself, then we are deceived, or proud, or both.
It greatly saddens me to see people actually laughing about the name of Yeshua when it comes up. Yeshua is God's name, accept it or deny it. There's no middle ground. This is indicative of a "falling away" as mentioned in the book of Revelation.
Names are not subject to translation. Although it may be said we say that someone named Frank here would be "Paco" in Spain, for example, that's not true, either, unless "Frank" decided to actually CHANGE HIS NAME. This is a uniquely American belief, that names "translate." They don't, and no other (non-English-speaking) country has this strange belief, to my knowledge. Some people choose to adopt a name that is similar to their own, if they enter a different culture, but names do not "translate."
When I lived in Europe, I was DON in Germany, in Hungary, in Italy, in Denmark, in Austria, and even in Switzerland.
Yeshua is Yeshua yesterday, today, and forever. So is His name. In fact, the letter "J" wasn't even INVENTED until the 17th century!
My Lord was named Yeshua by God Himself, through the messenger of God, Gavri'el. He was called Yeshua all His earthly life, and He died for me, and for you, too. He is mentioned, by name, in the old testament 78 times, in the original text that God gave. There are hundreds of outright mistranslations that can be found by anyone open-minded enough to realize that the Bible was given to us in Hebrew, and has been distorted, intentionally or not, by men, some who were well-intentioned, and others who were not.
The devil has also changed, through the roman church, the sabbath. The devil is VERY effective at engineering humanity to his liking, as long as we neglect God's wishes, and put our pride before Him. It is nothing other than pride, pure and simple, that could POSSIBLY keep us from honoring God's name that He chose for Himself. That's DANGEROUS. The Bible says "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry."
Stubbornness, pride, idolatry, self-worship, rebellion... all the same thing in God's eyes.
Another problem with the church today, also indicative of a "falling away" as mentioned in Revelation: the celebration of pagan holidays. Most English language translations of the Bible contain a mention of "Easter" in Acts 12:4. That is a blatant mistranslation. In the original text it is "PESCHA" the Greek translation of "Pesach" which is PASSOVER - one of God's Holy days - a holy day (actually 7) that it we are ordered to keep, along with the rest of GOD'S ORDAINED HOLY DAYS.
Christmas is another pagan holiday, really called "Saturnalia" - Yeshua was NOT born in December, but scripture and historical documents both tell when He was born - during the holy days of Sukkoth (the Feast of Tabernacles), usually in September or October. (Our calendar is usually out of synch with God's calendar) Valentine's day, halloween - they are all pagan high "holy" days. There are enough articles on the subject in books at libraries, in encyclopedia, and on the internet to keep someone busy reading for years, if one is really interested in uncovering the truth about the pagan nature of the holidays celebrated by most of the world. Even Groundhog day is a pagan holiday - it's called "Imbolc," and that, too, can be easily verified by anyone who is inclined to do the necessary research.
It is high time that we, in our "rich-increased-with-goods-in-need-of-nothing" society get a wake-up call, and realize that Yeshua is coming back, soon, and this time, not as a sacrificial lamb, but rather as the Lion of Yehudah.
It is high time we choose whom we shall serve, and it had better be God. On HIS terms, according to His teachings. We must choose to not live like pagans anymore. We must believe in, and witness the name and the gospel of Yeshua.
"...Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." Acts 4:19 - 20
Bearing false witness is still contrary to the scripture, and we are cautioned often about false teaching. Who in their right mind would teach falsely?
Anyone who, through pride, was subject to haSatan, the adversary, that's who.
We don't need to learn Hebrew or Greek to "witness to get to the truth of God's word, but it doesn't hurt. If you really want to know God, learn how to read His word in the original languages. You will be blessed beyond belief for the effort, I can assure you. I have never yet met a pastor that could intelligently discuss scripture like most rabbis can, because rabbis learn to read Tanach (Old Testament) scripture in the original text, Hebrew. If they are Messianic rabbis, they learn the Brit Chadashah (New Testament) in the original text, too - in Greek. NOTE: (It is believed by many, because of syntax and semantic clues, that the New testament was also originally written in Hebrew. This makes a lot of sense, since Rav Sha'ul (Paul), Yeshua, and most of the early believers were, in fact, Hebrew, and Jewish. I am leaning more toward this belief every day. Don, 09/2009)
Like I always say when I teach, I don't want anyone to take my word for ANYTHING just because I said it. Rather, is it not wiser to be like the Bereans (See Acts 17), and search it out for ourselves? If we research it, prayerfully, we'll get to the truth as God intended. God intended for us to be knowledgeable in scripture.
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to Me; seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children." Hosea 4:6
Very shortly after I first taught about God's true name and nature, I heard the very same message going out on the radio, being taught by a well-known evangelist. God said in the last days, He'd make His name known, and would not allow His name to be blasphemed any more. (Ezekiel 39)
God will not hold us blameless when we say we didn't know the truth. It's all laid out nicely in black and white, and if I can understand it, and take the time to learn it in the original text, then almost anyone can - just turn off the TV, (better yet, throw it away) sit in a well-lit area - somewhere comfortable, pray for God to shed light on His word, and start digging. He will bless you as you search!
When I am ridiculed for teaching about YHVH/Yeshua, I count it an honor. He said we would be hated for His name's sake, almost 2000 years ago. So, thank you for honoring me. I am blessed!
Here is a link to the text version of the notes from the teaching I did in February of 2007 at a church in Naples, Florida, in case you want to start digging into the truth for yourself:
You can get the necessary Hebrew fonts for free here, if you need them:
I am not interested anymore in churches that aren't RUNNING toward God. I am desperately seeking a deeper relationship with my living God, Yeshua. I love Him, and I want to please Him. I will do anything for Him, including keeping His teaching, known as "Torah." ("Torah" does not mean "law" as is commonly taught, but rather, is the Hebrew word for "Teaching" or "Instruction."
(More on Torah here.)
Because of these issues, my wife and I attend a Messianic Synagogue/church.
It is not my intention to debate scripture. If you want to check out scripture from a different perspective, take a look for yourself. As I said, you'll be blessed for it. Come one, come all.
Contact me, and I'll get you an address of a Messianic house of worship near you.
I bear no ill will toward any of the churches, or pastors that are in my past - they were all instrumental in getting me here, and "here" isn't a destination... It's just a place in the journey, a moment in time. I forgive anyone who's wronged me on the way, or ridiculed me for my teaching, or been abusive, or whatever. It's too trivial in the light of the greatness of Yeshua. Anyone who has ever wronged me will remain in my prayers, if I remember.
But it should deeply shame any one of us that denigrates or trivializes the importance of the name of Yeshua. He is God. He came to save us from ourselves. He IS our salvation. How can we not surrender to Him?
